Chamber of Commerce October Leadership Lunch

Old Chicago Vegetarian Pizza in the oven

Old Chicago's vegetarian pizza - fresh ingredients cooked to perfection

Every year the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce brings a select group of local business leaders together for a 10 month leadership course.  Once a month they meet for a full day and explore community topics such as agriculture, education, the arts, public safety and so on.

October’s leadership meeting was at the Petaluma Recreation Center on North McDowell.

We were honored to be asked to provide lunch for the event and thought that our Old Chicago Pizza would be the perfect fit.

Owner Dave Weinstock and his staff prepared vegetarian, sausage and pesto chicken pizzas, green salad and a delicious variety of their signature hot cookies.

The verdict from the Petaluma Leadership class? Delicious!

Try out Old Chicago Pizza for yourself and see – ideal for the cool winter evenings ahead.

Old Chicago Pizza and Delivery is located at 203 N. McDowell (next door to Starbucks). Phone (707) 766-8600.

Thank you Petaluma!

Beauty Worx Cut-A-Thon

Stylist Marcia and a happy customer at the Beauty Worx Cut-A-Thon

Thank you Petaluma!  Our first breast cancer Cut-A-Thon, sponsored by Beauty Worx Salon and Supply, was a resounding success.  Fifty people came to get their hair cut for the fundraiser and raffle tickets sold briskly.

All together, over $600 was raised for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation.  Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1.9 billion since inception in 1982, and has become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Kim Egide, owner of Beauty Worx Salon and Supply, said that the response to this first annual fundraiser was very enthusiastic.  Kim also mentioned how many people came up to her on Saturday and mentioned knowing someone with breast cancer or have been diagnosed themselves.

Kim wanted to thank her stylists for participating in the fundraiser and Plaza North marketing director Amy Cutler for facilitating this event.  Kim also wanted to thank the following Plaza merchants who donated goods and services to the Cut-A-Thon: Hunan Village, CVS, Don Pancho’s, Gold ‘n Time, US Army Recruiters, Mongolian BBQ, Hobbytown, Kmart and QPS.

Relay for Life Update – Thank You Petaluma!

Team Plaza North

Dustin, Tyler, Diana, Jamie, Daphne, Amy and Steve of Team Plaza North

Team Plaza North recently participated in Petaluma’s American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.  We are proud to be part of the local effort that raised over $195,000 total, money that will go to cancer research and to assistance and programs for cancer patients and their families.

Our nine member team has raised $2700 to date, putting us on the bronze level.  Most of it was raised in $50 increments or less, showing the power of a community pulling together.  Every little bit helps!

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated, participated, visited us and encouraged us.  We were there for 24 hours, taking turns at our booth and on the track.  It was inspirational to see so many cancer survivors and supporters at Relay for Life. It was encouraging to see so many members of the community turn out to support us, also.

And it’s not too late to donate.  Our team page is below.

Gwen and Patricia from Team Plaza North

Plaza North Kmart employees Gwen and Patricia joined Team Plaza North. Gwen walked 17 miles and Patricia walked 24 miles

My name is Daphne Shapiro and I have been the marketing director of Petaluma’s Plaza North Shopping Center since 2000. We are very community oriented here at The Plaza and in that spirit, our incredible maintenance team decided to form a Team Plaza North and participate in Petaluma’s Relay for Life last year. Dustin, Diana and Steve not only singlehandedly raised $700 for the American Cancer Society but also walked the track for countless hours during the relay (this is after working on their feet all week). I was incredibly proud of them. I donated money to the team and also walked the track for awhile. I felt really bad for people who had cancer and was happy to do my part to help out.

Halloween Costume Drive at Massage Envy

It’s getting to be that time of year again – the leaves are falling, the nights are longer, there is a crispness in the air and we start wondering – what was that creaking noise we just heard as we lay in our beds? Why it’s our kids crawling around in their closets trying – unsuccessfully – to squeeze into their last year’s Halloween costumes.

Have no fear!

There is a terrific and creative solution for those outgrown costumes right here at The Plaza North.

Donate them.

You can drop off costumes, wigs and props at The Plaza North Massage Envy. Owner Gina Drohan and her fabulous Ladybug Connections organization are currently collecting costumes to pass on to local children who otherwise could not afford Halloween gear.

Massage Envy is located at 247 N. McDowell (between Hobbytown and Kmart) Phone: (707) 763-6274.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life logoThe American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is coming to Petaluma this weekend and we are stoked!  Team Plaza North has nine members and thanks to the generosity of this community we have exceeded our stated goal.  That doesn’t mean we’re finished.  You can still donate – all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society for their programs in research and assistance to cancer patients.

Relay for Life is taking place at Casa Grande High School. Opening ceremonies and the survivor’s lap begin at 10 am Saturday morning. The Luminaria Ceremony takes place at 9:00 pm and the closing ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday morning at 9:30 am.  We invite you to visit Team Plaza North. You will find us on the track or at our campsite. Walk with us, visit the booths and vendors at the event, enjoy the great music, the upbeat atmosphere and most of all, join us in celebrating life.

Don Pancho’s Mexican Restaurant

don panchos fajitas

Fajitas come to the table sizzling!

Don Pancho’s has been a Plaza North and Petaluma fixture for the last ten years. This family owned and operated restaurant offers the best of Mexican food with pricing that’s affordable for every budget.

At The Plaza North, we have had many staff lunches at Don Pancho’s.  We can get six or seven of us in one of the deep booths and for bigger events, we have shoved several tables together.  There are also smaller, more intimate booths alongside the wall facing the open kitchen.

Meals at Don Pancho’s start with their signature chips and green and red salsas. Drinks come in tall glasses and are the perfect compliment to the irresistible tortilla chips. The trick is to stop eating the chips and salsa long enough to order food!  For a preview of the great dishes available, here is the Don Pancho Menu. There is truly something for everyone – Don Pancho’s even has a children’s menu, so the whole family can enjoy a meal out together.

Don Pancho's beans and rice

Don Pancho's piles the plates high!

This last time, Daphne ordered her favorite dish of the moment, the tostada de mariscos.  A crisp tostada is piled high with seafood and avocado slices and at under $5, it’s a delicious bargain and good for a smallish appetite.  Amy ordered the beef fajita – which arrives sizzling hot on its own platter, along with flour tortillas and a separate plate piled high with beans, rice, green salad, sour cream, and guacamole. There was enough for her lunch and she shared the rest for dinner with her grown son.  A Don Pancho’s regular burrito is big enough for two and their largest burrito – the muy macho burrito – could possibly feed a small army!  Other staff favorites include the steak tacos, hamburgers from the Don Pancho’s Specialty Burger Menu,  quesadillas with shrimp, and huevas rancheros.  I tend to drift seasonally, ordering the taco salad or the seafood tostada in warmer weather and the beef soup in the winter.

Don pancho's pico de gallo

It doesn't get any fresher than this!

When Amy and Daphne were at Don Pancho’s last week, we were treated to the world premier of Don Pancho’s new dessert, the Capalina Sundae.  A scoop of vanilla ice cream in a deep fried flour tortilla, with your choice of fudge, strawberry or caramel syrup.  If that wasn’t enough, two dollops of cinnamon dusted whipped cream surround the ice cream and tortilla.  Delicious!  Don Pancho’s is putting together a new menu, and the Capalina Sundae will be making its official appearance in September.

Don Pancho’s also has a full bar.

Don Pancho’s is located at 285 North McDowell Boulevard (between CVS and Kmart)  Phone: (707) 775-2474.
