Don Pancho's Grilled Vegetable Fajita
We were recently in Afendi’s having lunch, when we started chatting with a couple from Marin County. They had decided to come up to Petaluma for lunch with the caveat that the meal had to be vegan. Like vegetarians, vegans eat no meat, fish or chicken. However, unlike vegetarians, vegan diets also exclude all animal products, including dairy, eggs and honey.
Challenging? Well, it used to be. However, nowadays, being able to find vegetarian and vegan food is no longer a problem. There are plenty of options, even in the fast food world, and we visited several of our Plaza North restaurants to find out what’s possible.
There's plenty to choose from at Mongolian BBQ
Our first stop was Mongolian BBQ, where we found a wide range of ingredients just waiting to be put together and cooked into a delicious, healthy colorful bowl. Tofu, broccoli, bean sprouts, carrots, onions, are just a few of the possibilities. Mixed up with some noodles or rice, flavored with a savory sauce of your choosing and then quick grilled, Mongolian BBQ is a vegan feast. Lunch is $10 and dinner is $13. Afendi's Mediterrnean Mezza platter is a wonder to behold
Afendi’s Turkish Grill also has a full menu of delicious middle eastern items that are vegetarian and vegan friendly. Our favorite is the Mediterranean Mezza – a great combo of different, delicious salads and middle eastern treats, from savory to spicy including eggplant, humus, dolmas and whatever else is on Chef Joe’s mind that day. Even our fast food restaurants, Burger King and Subway, offer options for vegetarian and vegan dining. We enjoy the vegetable sandwich at Subway, substituting avocado for cheese for a delicious, crunchy, satisfying sandwich. Subway Sandwiches also offers a full ingredient list of all of their food products – which is a great go-to guide if you are not entirely sure what to order.

Starbucks also offers vegetarian and vegan options for customers. We like the hot chocolates and the smoothies with soy milk, for starters! Remember – when in doubt, ask your server or the chef! They will be happy to help you pick out the best option, no matter what your dietary needs are.That’s what we did at Don Pancho’s. The delicious vegetable fajita was “off-menu” but they had it on our table in no time. The verdict? Delicious!

It seems ridiculous to be writing about outdoor dining in the middle of February, but according to the weather reports, we still have a few more nice days ahead of us before it starts raining again.
We took a walk around The Plaza this warm Friday afternoon and checked out a couple of spots where you can sit down and enjoy the sun while it lasts.
Burger King has a patio on the north side of the restaurant. Nicely landscaped, Burger King’s outdoor dining area has both sunny and shady seating options and faces North McDowell Boulevard, where you can watch the world go by.
Nearby, Subway Sandwich also has a pleasant outdoor dining patio partially shaded with an overhead lattice.
For dessert or a midday snack, pick up a personally customized Brain Freeze frozen yogurt treat and have a seat in the Brain Freeze Patio.
And for the ultimate cafe experience, grab your beverage of choice and sit and chat for awhile in the shade at Starbucks.

In a few short months, you'll be shopping at Lola's
As you have probably noticed, it’s been busy here at The Plaza North and occasionally challenging to get around. It’s all for a good cause, however, and we wanted to update you on all of the construction around the shopping center.
At 241 N. McDowell (between Trader Joe’s and Kmart) Lola’s Market is under construction. This full scale Hispanic market is slated for opening in the next few months. We are excited about being able to bring this new and exciting retail experience to Petaluma. Lola’s is renowned for the bakery, the seafood and meat departments, the fresh, locally grown produce, as well as the great selection of day to day grocery products. The Highway 101 construction is going full steam ahead behind the shopping center
Behind Kmart, construction continues on the long-awaited rebuilding and expansion of the interchange that connects East Washington Street to Highway 101. Although some of the trees that lined the highway behind the shopping center are gone to accommodate a sound wall, it looks like the remaining trees behind Kmart will stay. Among the improvements planned is a straightening of the tightly curving southbound on ramp on East Washington Street, the addition of a second lane on an interchange’s northbound off ramp, and the introduction of a new northbound on ramp that will negate the need for drivers headed west on East Washington to make a left turn to go north on the highway. All of this is good news for Petaluma drivers.
Sixty eight new apartments are being built next door for low and fixed income seniors
And finally, just north of The Plaza North, construction is going full steam ahead on the Vintage Chateau expansion. This new phase will add 68 apartments for low and fixed income seniors. Just a few months ago we were at the ground breaking ceremonies. Needless to say, we are looking forward to soon welcoming our new neighbors at Vintage Chateau.
